Conference at CAUE92 — “The Blue Marble”

This event is part of the exhibition Survols

The expansion of aerial photography was accompanied by the birth of satellite imagery in the late 1950s, as the Space Race launched at full speed. A decade later, the first journeys to the moon allowed us to take a step back and immortalise the famous Blue Marble. These images of the Earth and the realisation of an evolution of the planetary physiognomy led to a widespread use of this imagery, especially in environmental matters. Among the most famous uses are those of deforestation tracking, pollution, light impact on the environment, erosion and urban densification and sprawl. Simultaneously, the introduction of open access to satellite images, by NASA and more recently by ESA, has enabled the development of environmental awareness in various professional practices, notably among architects. More and more of them are trying to cope with the current situation.
